Rubbish Valentine's Day date for town's MP

Thursday, 13th February 2014.

Haverhill's MP Matthew Hancock will be spending part of Valentine's Day in the town with some rubbish friends of his.

In January Mr Hancock spent time near Newmarket with a group high-viz clad West Suffolk women who call themselves the Rubbish Friends.

Since then the Friends' profile has grown, with regional and national TV appearances. They appeared on BBC Look East as well as The One Show and now are bringing their work to the outskirts of Haverhill tomorrow at 10am.

Every week the friends pick up around 15 bags of rubbish with the support of the local council, focusing on picking up litter discarded by careless motorists on smaller roads and lanes. They pick up everything from empty crisp packets to worrying full bottles.

Their aim is to lead by example and get more people involved in groups like theirs.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council is supporting them and will be collecting the rubbish at the end of the morning. Cllr Peter Stevens, the borough's cabinet member for waste, will also be picking litter as will local councillor Tim Marks and his wife Margaret.

Everyone is welcome to join Mr Hancock and the Rubbish Friends tomorrow. Anyone interested should email matthew.hancock.mp@parliament.uk for details.

Mr Hancock said: “Normally when you find yourself spending part of Valentine’s Day with rubbish friends it is because something has gone pretty badly wrong, but that’s not the case this Friday.

“I can’t wait to get stuck in and help the Rubbish Friends pick up litter around Haverhill. They’re a great group and what they do is brilliant.

"I never thought I would look forward to picking up litter but thanks to the Friends’ enthusiasm and the council’s support we should be able to do our part in tidying up our countryside. Anyone is welcome to join us, so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’d like to.”
