Runner makes sure charity is the winner

Thursday, 27th September 2001.

HOTEL worker Graeme Johnson is nursing a few aches and pains after completing the Great North Run, but hopes to have raised around
£500.

Mr Johnson, of Turner Close, Haverhill, will donate the money to the Ashby Ward muscular rehabilitation unit at St George’s Hospital in Lincoln, where his dying father-in-law was so well cared for. He hopes to buy a computer for patients there.

Although he has completed the 13 mile Newcastle run five times before, it was 11 years since Mr Johnson last took part.

He works at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cambridge and was in strict training for several months before the event.

Mr Johnson said: “I was younger and fitter In those days, and not quite so much these days, so it was quite a challenge for me.

“It went OK. It was not the world’s greatest time, but I did get over the finishing line.

“I had a leg injury in training which played up, so I slowed right down to makes sure I would finish.”
