Sale may call time on another estate pub

Thursday, 27th May 2010.

The second of Haverhill's three 'estate' pubs of the 1960s and 70s could end up being redeveloped for shops or housing.

The Vixen in Millfields Way on the Chalkstone estate has been put up for sale for around £275,000 (plus VAT).

The first of Haverhill's estate pubs to be closed and redeveloped was The Standard, in Queensway on the Parkway estate, which was knocked down about ten years ago and the site included in mixed development of shops and housing.

The Vixen, renamed in recent years, for most of its life has been known as The Scarlet Pimpernel, being given the name as the result of a competition when it was built.

Originally a Greene King pub, it became part of the Hungry Horse chain for a time, before being renamed.

Britannia Business Sales of Diss, who are selling the pub, describe it as a 1970's built freehouse, suitable for 'redevelopment'.

Its features are described as including a large main bar, a dining room with dance area, a garden, free adjacent car parking and three double bedrooms.

The pub is situated very close to Chalkstone Middle School, which itself is scheduled for closure and probable redevelopment as a care home.

If the pub were to go this would leave the Chalkstone estate's central facilities as just the Strasbourg Square parade of shops and Chalkstone Social Centre, which St Edmundsbury Borough Council is also looking to offload into local control.

Haverhill's single remaining overspill scheme estate pub would then be The Suffolk Punch on the Clements estate.
