SCC Gives Green Light for Haverhill School Changes

Tuesday, 24th June 2008.

Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet has approved proposals for the future of schools in the Haverhill area. Following a decision on Tuesday 24th June, plans will be implemented to manage the two year transition period. All of the changes will come into affect in full in September 2011.

The proposals, which were initially discussed by the cabinet in March, have since been the subject of a six week representation period. In total 13 representations were received. Details of representations received by the county council were presented to the cabinet, along with the original proposals.

Councillor Patricia O’Brien portfolio holder for children schools and young people’s services said: “The proposals agreed today were based on principles agreed by the county council in 2007 relating to pupil performance, the effective use of resources and creating a successful school system for the 21st Century. These proposals will help raise standards and encourage young people to achieve their full potential as well as ensuring schools are located where they can best serve their community.

She continued:” The changes will also help us to maximise benefits from funding opportunities, for example, significant capital funding available to Suffolk over the next 15 years through the Building Schools for the Future programme.”

A two year transition period has been included in the review timetable. This two year period will help to ensure adequate preparation has taken place to make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved. It will give staff the time to take up training or development opportunities to ensure they are equipped to make the change to the structure and to help young people improve their levels of achievement.

As part of these proposals, all middle schools in the Haverhill area will close in September 2011, with young people remaining in primary schools until the age of 11 before transferring to a secondary school.
