School given safety funding

Thursday, 12th July 2001.

PUPILS at St Felix Primary School, in Haverhill, are to try to improve road safety around their school after receiving a £20,000 grant from the Department of Education.

St Felix Roman Catholic Primary School will link up with St Margaret's Preparatory School, at Gosfield, Essex, for the project over the next year.

It was one of 34 new independent-state school partner-ships across the country to be funded by the Government.

Colin Rawlins, headteacher at St Felix, devised a joint bid with Bernice Boyton, principal of St Margaret's School.

Both schools wanted to give pupils a greater understanding of road safety and related issues.
St Felix School, in School Lane, is close to two other schools and is a recognised traffic blackspot. Petitions have been organised in the past for safety improvements.

Pupils of both schools involved in the project will meet and compare localities in terms of environment, industry, roads, transport, recreation and lesiure facilites.

They will produce surveys, questionnaires and other data with a view to bringing about improvements in local facilities.

The youngsters will work with organisations such as the police, wildlife trusts, borough councils and planning departments.

They will consider road safety issues and produce educational material for both children and adults.

Drama and other methods will be used to make presentations to other pupils, parents and the local community on road safety issues.

Pupils will also work together to develop a range of skills, such as debating, and cycling proficiency sessions will be held at both schools.

Mr Rawlins said both he and Mrs Boyton were delighted that the joint project had been approved and hoped to complete the work with pupils during the next academic year.
