School plays host to latest technology

Thursday, 23rd February 1995.

Pictures of Saturn direct from Nasa, weather reports from Antarctica and contact with a German magazine publisher were available in minutes to librarians visiting a Haverhill school.
West Suffolk school librarians and teachers met at Samuel Ward Upper School to view the latest computer technology, including the worldwide Internet system.
Internet is a global network of computers linking over 30 million people and 3 million computers, with more being added every day. Government departments, universities, commercial companies, charities and individuals all participate.
The 10-minute demonstration at Samuel Ward linking to Nasa and the other sources, was available for a 30p phone call.
Samuel Ward was chosen for the area meeting because it is at the leading edge of computer technology in education both in the classroom and the library.
The school library has a wide range of the latest CD-ROM information discs available to pupils.
Librarian Janet Martin said the future trend would be the use of more computer-based resources.
But she did not believe this would never entirely replace the convenience of books, which students could take home to read at leisure.
Head of Suffolk School Library Service Malcolm Emmett attended the demonstration along with teachers from Haverhill Middle Schools.
