School seeks hosts for Chinese students

Friday, 11th December 2009.

A Haverhill upper school is seeking people prepared to host Chinese students who will be studying at the school for two years.

Samuel Ward College of Arts and Technology welcomed ten Chinese students into its sixth form in September this year, where they are taking A level courses for two years.

In September 2010 the college hopes to welcome another 25 Chinese students into its community.

Jan Bergau, co-ordinator for internationalism at the college, said: "In order for them to gain the most from their English experience we are looking for host families for their first academic year.

"They have a full-time Chinese member of staff who is living in Haverhill and who is responsible for the students’ emotional welfare. Host families are asked to provide room and board.

"The students are expecting to pay £130 per week each for a spacious bedroom and £110 per week if sharing (should you have a room large enough to accommodate two) or if the room is small.

"The students will almost certainly be flying back to China during the Christmas and Easter holidays so it will mainly be during term time that they would be with you.

"If you feel that you might be able to accommodate one of the students, or if you would simply like more information, please contact me at school on 01440 761511.

"I am sure that you understand the necessity for us to complete a Criminal Records check on host families in order to ensure the well being of these young people."
