Shops reminded to register to sell fireworks

Thursday, 14th March 2002.

Shopkeepers in Suffolk are being advised to register with trading standards if they want to help the Queen’s Golden Jubilee go off with a bang.

All shops wanting to sell fireworks must be registered with trading standards. Although many are already registered, it is anticipated additional shops might want to sell fireworks for the Queen’s Jubilee.

Peter Monk, Suffolk County Council, said: “This is not just a matter of complying with the law. When they register with us, we can offer advice on the safe storage of fireworks. If there is an accident and fireworks have not been stored properly, shop keepers may not be able to claim on their insurance.”

Celebrations for the Jubilee are planned all year, but the main focus is expected to be in June when the nation will have an extra two days holiday – June 3 and 4.

As part of a grand tour of Britain and the Commonwealth the Queen will be in Suffolk on Wednesday 17 July when she will visit Ipswich, Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds.

For information on registering call trading standards on 01473 584368.
