Singer on bill with a legend

By Frances Evans on Thursday, 23rd August 2001.

A SINGER'S dream of becoming a pop superstar has moved a step closer after being picked to support soul legend Lionel Ritchie.

Kirsten Gundersen, 18, from Haverhill, will be sharing a line-up with the legendary singer in a concert at the Peterborough River Embankment next month.

The former Commodore and his management team heard about the talented teenager after they were played a demo tape sent to the U.S.

"It's absolutely fantastic," said Kirsten. "Lionel Ritchie is one of my favourite artists, particularly for his songwriting.

"I also saw a documentary about him and since then I've liked everything he's done.

"For me this is the biggest gig I have had yet. Apparently there will be at least 10,000 people there.

"I have sung to about 33,000 during half-time at a Manchester City football match, but that was just one song and I couldn't really see the audience."

Kirsten won a recording contract with London-based Sanctuary/Sacred Records. Her debut album is expected out early next year.

The teenager is also in demand for her songwriting talents and is currently being pursued by two publishing companies.

At the beginning of the year, she embarked on a UK charity tour to raise money for the National Meningitis Trust and the National Asthma Campaign.

She also clinched a sponsorship deal with Red Devil energy drinks and there are plans to work alongside actor and footballer Vinnie Jones on advertising campaigns.

The concert next month will also feature singer Samantha Fox. The gates open at 4pm and tickets cost £25 for more information call the Key Theatre box office (01733) 552439 or the NEC on 0870 9094133.

CAPTION: On the Ritchie list ... Kirsten Gundersen will be on the same bill as soul legend Lionel.
