Skate park dream a step closer

Thursday, 15th November 2001.

YOUNG skateboarders and BMX riders have seen their dream of a skatepark for the town come closer to reality this week.

Derek Redhead, leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Jackie Smith, Community Development Officer, met the youngsters at the site proposed for skatepark in Howe Road.

Members of the Council Leisure services committee meeting today are recommended to allocate £40,000 for the allocation of a skatepark.

A group called Haverskate has been formed by the young enthusiasts, who have drawn up their own plans of what they would like to see provided at the park. The funds allocated by the council would cover the basic structure of the area, but the youngsters are seeking their own fund-raising to but more equipment.

Sara Mildmay-White, chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services committee, said they were keen to talk to young people in Haverhill and have been working hard to see their dreams become a reality and this is a chance for them to put their views across before the committee makes its final decision on funding,” Coun Mildmay-White said.
