Slick Rovers keep up the pressure

Thursday, 21st March 2002.

Haverhill Rovers kept up the pressure on the leading pack in the Jewson League Division One with a comfortable 3 – 0 win over Hadleigh.

Paul Goodman's side took the lead on 13 minutes when Mark Brandt latched on to a long ball by Dave Walton.

Brandt went past the defender and took a long touch which the keeper got to, but he spilled the ball leaving the striker to tap home at his leisure.

The lead was doubled on 35 minutes when a failed clearance by a Hadleigh defender presented the ball to Paul Jenkin.

He passed to Ben Cowling and got the ball back before despatching the shot past the keeper from the edge of the area.

The scoring was completed on 83 minutes when substitute Brian Holmes's attempted chip was parried by the keeper and the lively Brandt was on hand to chalk up his second of the match.

Manager Paul Goodman said: "It was fairly comfortable and we did not have to extend ourselves too much.

“It was quite a poor first half, but we took the goals well.

“We performed really well lasts Saturday with some entertaining football and this Saturday it was a scrappy game and it was stop-start.

“Once we got the goals we looked really comfortable. They started the better side but we settled down after 20 minutes.

“We rested a couple of players and gave others a chance and they did very well.”

Derrin Brindley picked up a yellow card during the game and if he collects another caution he could pay dearly by missing the Suffolk Senior Cup Final against Kirkley at Portman Road.

The fixture is scheduled for April 9 (7.30 ko)
