Special guests attend golf club seniors presentation

Tuesday, 16th April 2013.

The Seniors Section at Haverhill Golf Club invited Mrs Veronica Kernutt, her daughter Sonia and granddaughter Elie to attend their presentation on Monday, April 8.

Seniors captain Peter Mercer introduced Elie to all those attending and she thanked the golf club for the invitation on behalf of her family.

She went on to remember her grandfather, Roy Kernutt, a former member of the Golf Club, as someone who was very passionate about the game of golf and added the award was given in respect of this.

The Seniors Section nominated Roger Campbell to receive the Kernutt Cup in recognition of the valuable contribution he has made since joining the club in 1996.

He served as club captain in 2002, is currently serving on the seniors’ committee as treasurer, as well as assisting with the Juniors’ Section and other club events.

Elie also presented cups to the following trophy winners:- Alistair Cocks for the Winter League, Charlie Tapp and Ann Thompson for the Bleasdale Cup, Gill Richardson for the Ladies Monday League and Roger Corbett for the Mott Cup (Men’s Monday league).

Prior to the presentation, the seniors played in a texas scramble competition which was won by Geoff Dorkins, Colin Durston, Alan Whitfield and Dave Parsons.

Haverhill Juniors played in the A Steam on Thursday, April 11. The competition was divided up into a medal event for handicaps 0-21 and a stableford for handicaps 22 and above.

In second place was Jason Carpenter with 43pts, reducing his handicap by two shots and in third place Matthew Carpenter with 34pts.

The P Franklin Junior competition was played on Friday, April 12, and, despite the rain, some excellent scores were returned. This event was also divided up into medal for handicaps 0-21 and stableford for handicaps 22 and above.

Haverhill hosted a friendly match against Abbotsley for the ‘Bone of Contention’ Trophy on Saturday, April 13. In all, 28 players took part in the foursomes matchplay competition with Hambro scoring, and the Haverhill team seized a commanding ten-hole victory to retain the trophy for 2013.

Haverhill’s first match in their Curry Cup campaign for 2013 was played away at Felixstowe on Sunday, April 14. In difficult conditions with 40mph winds gusting across the course throughout the day, the hosts took full advantage of playing on home ground to win by 15-3.

Although it was a disappointing start for Haverhill, Curry Cup captain Joe Davis is hoping to reverse the team’s fortune when they are drawn at home against Colchester in their next league match on May 18.

It was, however, a successful day for Haverhill in their Mixed Match away to Seckford, also played on Sunday.

The Haverhill team, led by club captain Gordon Price and lady captain Sheila Price, secured a win by six holes.
