Sport Relief Mile comes to Haverhill

Friday, 24th February 2012.

Haverhill is set to host its first Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday, March 25, and become part of the UK’s biggest fundraising events.

The Sport Relief Mile is held every other year at locations across the UK and anyone of any age or ability can take part by walking, running or jogging, including those with physical and learning disabilities.

The charity event is being organised by Haverhill Running Club in partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure and will set off from Haverhill Leisure Centre, past the cinema complex and cricket club before the return journey along the pretty railway walk.

Entrants can choose to be sponsored to run, jog or walk one, three or six miles in aid of Sport Relief.

The money is used by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people, both at home and across the world’s poorest countries.

There will be a host of children’s activities organised by Haverhill Leisure Centre to mark the Mile providing a taster of the centre’s holiday camps which are run during the school holidays.

Activities including racket sports, basketball, football, laser blast will be available in the main sports hall.

Trevor Bunch, chairman of Haverhill Running Club, said: “This is the first year Haverhill has been chosen to host a Sport Relief Mile and the running club is thrilled to lend its support.

“It is another fantastic coup for people in Haverhill after the announcement last year that the town will be part of the Olympic torch relay.

"You don’t have to be an athlete to take part in the Mile - anyone from tots with their mums and dads, to super sprinters can take part on the big day - and I hope people in the town will perhaps use this as an incentive to start training and take part in this fantastic charity event.”

More than £44million was raised through Sport Relief in 2010 and organisers are hoping to beat this in 2012.

Amelia Epton, Abbeycroft’s children and young people programme manager, said: “We are thrilled that the town has been chosen and we are pleased to be working in partnership Haverhill Running Club on this event.

“We hope that people from across the town will come along and join in to raise money for this fantastic cause.”

There will be two waves of runners, with start times at 12pm and 1.30pm. Entry costs £6 per adult, £3 per child or £15 for a family entry.
