Sport to give positive futures to youngsters

Sunday, 16th December 2001.

YOUNGSTERS at Haverhill are to benefit from £5 million national scheme which uses sport to keep them away from crime and drugs.

Suffolk will receive “280,000 over two years from the Positive Future’s scheme with the Clements ward in Haverhill one of 13 to benefit. Wards chosen were those within the top 20 per cent of most deprived areas in the country.

The scheme is aimed at 10 to 16 year olds and in Suffolk, funds will be used to set up an extensive range of sporting activities and events aimed at both sexes and all abilities,

The partnership scheme aims to provide young people with a positive alternative to hanging around on street corners, It is hoped to steer them away from substance misuse, crime and anti-social behaviour by encouraging positive attitudes and community awareness.

Taster sessions are due to begin in the New Year and will help discover which sports youngsters want to be available.

Suffolk County Council, the police, St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Sport England are involved in the scheme and Trevor Brooking, chairman of Sport England, said he was delighted the government had recognised the contribution sport could make in shaping young people’s lives. Ipswich Town stars Titus Bramble is one of the leading role models supporting the project.

Bryony Rudkin, member of Suffolk County Council’s executive committee, said the funding was good news for young people in Suffolk.

“Positive futures gives us the opportunity to lead healthier safer lives and to achieve their full potential. It can also have a very positive effect on the communities they live in,” Ms Rudkin said.
