Sports awards to be launched by Haverhill Paralympian

Thursday, 17th March 2011.

Sports Personality of the Year 2010 and Paralympian Caroline Maclean will launch the 2011 St Edmundsbury Sports Awards on Monday.

Caroline, who plays for the Great Britain women's wheelchair basketball squad and has competed in Paralympic Games in Sydney, Athens and Beijing, will join representatives of Haverhill sports clubs and sponsors of the awards.

The St Edmundsbury Sports Awards, which are run each year by Abbeycroft Leisure, recognise outstanding sporting achievements made by sports men, women and juniors throughout the year and celebrate the huge amount of work that takes place within sport in the borough of St Edmundsbury.

The award scheme, supported by the Haverhill Echo and Bury Free Press, is open to all sports enthusiasts and volunteers who are affiliated to a club within St Edmundsbury, part of a school team in the borough of St Edmundsbury or reside within St Edmundsbury borough.

Nominations can now be made on the Abbeycroft website at www.acleisure.com and the closing date is midnight on August 14.

There are 12 categories to enter. Awards are made for: Sports Personality of the Year, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Unsung Hero, Lifetime Achievement, Triumph Over Adversity, Coach of the Year, Contribution to Disability Sport, Young Community Volunteer of the Year, Club of the Year, Senior Team of the Year, Junior Team of the Year, and School of the Year.

A glittering awards ceremony for 300 guests will take place on Sunday, September 11, at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre to celebrate the successes of St Edmundsbury’s sporting stars.

Winners of the St Edmundsbury Sports Awards then go on to the Suffolk Sports Awards in October hosted by Suffolk Sport.

If they are successful there they could be put forward for BBC East Sports Awards. In 2010 West Suffolk Wheelers and Triathlon Club won Club of the Year at the St Edmundsbury Sports Awards.

They were put forward to the Suffolk Sports Awards where they also won the title and then went through to the BBC East Sports Awards where they won Club of the Year.

Warren Smyth, chief executive of Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “We are delighted that Caroline and will launch the opening of nominations for the 2011 awards.

"Caroline’s achievements as an athlete are amazing. Her successes are well known in Haverhill and she fully deserved to win Sports personality of the Year in 2010.

"We hope this year’s sports awards will highlight the achievements of more sports men and women in the borough who, like Caroline, are pushing themselves to achieve personal goals in their chosen sport.”
