St John's first aid training being held in town

The nation’s leading first aid charity is offering first aid training in Haverhill to make it easier for members of the public and employers in the area to learn vital life-saving skills.
The St John Ambulance venue at Burton End, which is home to the charity’s Haverhill division, is ideally located for local people and for businesses in West Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
For businesses, one-day Emergency First Aid At Work courses are being held to make it easier for local firms to meet their responsibility to ensure adequate first aid cover in the work place.
Previously, they would have had to travel to Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds or Colchester.
For the local community, there are plans to hold three-hour Essential First Aid courses (for all ages) during 2013.
These are designed to suit anyone in the community who would like to learn some basic first aid, such as how to treat chest pains, choking, and bleeding, how to resuscitate and how to place someone in the recovery position – all skills that could be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
Sue Skoyles, regional training manager for St John Ambulance in the east, said: "We felt this area was under-served in terms of first aid training facilities and we wanted to make it easier for local firms to meet their responsibility to ensure adequate first aid cover in the work place.
"Haverhill is in an excellent location, very close to the east region’s road network and many businesses. We’re confident local firms will see this as a real benefit, with their staff having to take less time out of their busy work schedules to learn essential first aid."
The start of these first aid courses in Haverhill marks an exciting time for the town’s St John Ambulance division.
The facilities at Haverhill have recently been updated, thanks to donations from Havebury Housing Partnership’s Neighbourhood Investment Panel and the Mayor of St Edmundsbury’s Official Charity Fund.
The money has enabled the division to buy essential first aid and training equipment for its volunteers, who regularly provide first aid cover at public events. The building has also been redecorated, had new carpets fitted and new fixtures and fittings installed.
Haverhill division’s acting unit manager, Trevor Bailey, said: "We are very grateful to have had this opportunity to update the facilities at Haverhill, which means we are now able to play an even greater part in being the difference in our community, offering first aid support and training to local people.
"Our volunteers play such an important role in ensuring first aid is available to those who need it."
The Haverhill division, which meets every Wednesday evening, is looking for more volunteers to get involved with the work of St John Ambulance.
