Stage Two of Suffolk's School Review Opens in Haverhill

Wednesday, 24th October 2007.

The second stage of consultation in Suffolk’s review of school organisation starts in the areas of Haverhill and Lowestoft on Monday 29th October. From that date, members of the public will be able to have their say on a number of options for schools in their areas. The consultation period will run for 12 weeks until 18 January 2008.

A number of public meetings have also been arranged at all the schools involved, starting from 12 November.

Parents of all children currently attending the schools in the areas will shortly receive a pack of consultation material, through the post, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to take part and have their say.

The material will also be available from libraries, council buildings and the website: www.suffolk.gov.uk/sor (see below)

Cllr Patricia O’Brien, Suffolk’s portfolio holder for children, schools and young people’s services said “The county council decided it would prefer a move to a two tier school system throughout Suffolk. Now we need everyone, not simply parents, to look at a number of options and to say what they think would be the best solution for their area.

“We want to achieve a quality education system for Suffolk which will enable all children and young people to achieve their full potential, giving them the basis for a successful life as active members of the community. This consultation is an important step towards achieving that vision. I would urge everyone in Lowestoft and Haverhill to look at the consultation material and to give their views.”

The way schools are organised in Suffolk has not changed much since 1974. Currently, some children go to two schools (primary and secondary, the ‘two-tier’ system) and others go to three schools (primary, middle and upper: the ‘three-tier’ system) during their school life.
