Stolen truck dumped in river after ram-raid

Tuesday, 9th February 2010.

The series of burglaries and break-ins across the Haverhill area has escalated with five incidents in the last few days.

In one, a 4x4 was stolen from Linton and used to ram-raid an industrial unit in Haverhill before being dumped in the River Stour at Wixoe.

In another, a second house in Sorrel Walk was burgled within a week.

Just after 7pm on Saturday the ram-raiders smashed the doors of an industrial unit in Helions Bumpstead Road with a grey and black Daihatsu 4x4, stolen from Linton.

They took a quantity of copper piping and then dumped the damaged vehicle in the river near the ford at Wixoe.

The Chimswell estate was targeted by burglars again, after a burglary last week in Sorrel Walk. Between 7pm on Wednesday and 6pm on Thursday an attempt was made to break into a shed in Betony Walk, but nothing was taken.

But between 10.30am and 8pm on Sunday, another home in Sorrel Walk was burgled by forcing a window and cash, jewellery and videos stolen.

On Saturday between 10.15am and 7pm burglars broke into a house by smashing a window and stole a stereo and console games.

Even the council tip in Coupals Road is not safe, because between 5pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday thieves broke into containers, including a hazardous waste container, and stole scrap items.

Police admit they are not making much progress in dealing with the current spate of theft and burglary, mainly because it seems so far to have no particular pattern to which they can direct resources effectively for a concerted investigation.
