Stone me! Couple's loss is well worth the weight

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 9th March 2000.

A HUSBAND and wife who have lost an amazing eight stones between them may soon be crowned Mr and Mrs Slimming World 2000.
Gerry and Anne Start, who have five children, have made it through to the national finals of the contest - and are in with a chance of a romantic weekend in Venice and £500 spending money if they win.
The couple's children - Claire, 15, Michael, 13, Christopher, five, Rosemary, four, and three-year-old Philip - are now seeing three stones less of their mother and a massive five stones less of their father.
Mrs Stuart is already celebrating the fact that she will not have to be fat and 40 when she celebrates her birthday with her family, of Vetch Walk, Haverhill, on March 23.
The new-look mum said she had been getting so fat that she was dreading her birthday but is now looking for a glamorous outfit to celebrate.
Mrs Start said: "We do sometimes treat ourselves to a Chinese or Indian takeaway at the weekend. You can't eat a lot of food, but it is nice to have something naughty occasionally."
She added: "It really helped that we gave each other the support."
Mr Start still enjoys his pint of beer, but said his new weight had made him feel much more healthy.
"We now have loads of energy, which is great as the children used to wear us out and now we are an even match," he said.
The couple took just over a year to lose the weight at the Slimming World class at Felix Social Club in Haverhill.
Consultant Julie Collis said they were the first couple ever entered in the national contest from her class and she was really proud of their dramatic weight loss.
"It must be really hard when you have got five children to look after and feed. But they have done really well and it has been lovely how they Classes are held on Thursdays at 10am, 5.30pm and have supported each other," she said.
7.30pm.
