Sub's late goal gives Rovers a victorious start

Monday, 9th August 2010.

Haverhill Rovers notched up their first victory against Walsham since they joined the league in their first competitive match at The New Croft.

EASTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: Haverhill Rovers 1 Walsham-le-Willows 0, match report.

Both sides went close in the opening period, the home side's Louis Harper playing in Marc Abbott, only for Walsham goalkeeper Duncan McAnally to deny him with his feet.

Haverhill keeper Liam Cutts fumbled the ball near his goal-line and Oliver Hughes almost scrambled the ball over the line at the foot of the upright.

A scramble in the Haverhill area didn't bring dividends for Walsham in the second half.

But the bringing on of substitute Ryan Kent just past the hour mark proving to be the turning point for Haverhill as, in the 82nd minute, he cut back inside on the left wing and, just outside the corner of the area, curled a shot right into the bottom right corner of the net past McAnally and start his side's season off with all three points.

ROVERS: Liam Cutts, Sam Holmes, Greg Strong, Stuart Wardley, Jamie Challis, Stuart Kingham, Marc Abbott, Marcus Hunt, Craig Cutts, Louis Harper, Jack Higgs. Subs: Ryan Kent (for Jack Higgs, 62), Matt Clarke, Joe Boreham (for Jamie Challis, 81), Harry Halls (for Louis Harper, 81), Paul Hunt.
