Suffolk shunts off more work to St Edmundsbury

Monday, 29th November 2010.

Haverhill's grass-cutting, highway drainage, street cafe licensing and residents parking schemes are all likely to be taken over by St Edmundsbury Borough Council as Suffolk County Council gets rid of more functions.

These responsibilities have belonged to the county council until now, but they are thought to align better with borough functions.

St Edmundsbury already cuts a lot of grass in Haverhill, on the many sites which it owns, so adding verges and other county council areas is seen as sensible.

The borough carries out street sweeping, so drainage can be added to that, and it is responsible for many areas of licensing, so permissions for tables and chairs to be out in the street could be added.

The borough also provides and maintains car parks, so residents parking schemes are seen as a related function.

Suffolk County Council is making similar transfer agreements with other borough and district councils, as part of its latest measures to save money, notably concerning many of its Ipswich functions to Ipswich Borough Council.
