Take time out to help combat litter problem

Tuesday, 3rd June 2014.

Haverhill Community Ambassadors are holding a litter pick event around the School Lane area of the town, starting at Haverhill Rugby Club, on Saturday from 9.45am to 12 noon.

The ambassadors are appealing for members of the public who have an hour our two to spare to come along and help out, litter pickers, gloves and other equipment will be provided.

The Community Ambassadors Scheme was launched in February following the consultation on the Haverhill Community Budget Plan, during which members of the public told ONE Haverhill that they wanted to be able to do more to help keep their local community maintained.

ONE Haverhill is an independent partnership that brings organisations and resources together to make them more effective and efficient in the town – providing ONE voice for Haverhill.

Following an appeal in the local media, volunteers have come forward to take part in the scheme which sees each participant taking responsibility for a certain area of Haverhill in order to report issues such as broken street lights, pot holes and broken public fences, signage and pavements.

Community ambassador Michael Simpkin said: “We are looking for people who want to take action against litter in our town.

"As community ambassadors we wanted to tackle a problem area in Haverhill and this area of town near the park, rugby club and duck pond has suffered with litter problems in the past and this is a quick way in which we can make a big difference to our community.

"We hope others will take a bit of time out on a Saturday morning to help. Bring the family along and get some exercise while doing something good for our town.”

The scheme is run and supported by Community Action Suffolk and the ambassadors are able to carry out minor repairs where they want and are able to, supported by St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath volunteer field officer Elaine Hewes and with equipment provided by Suffolk County Council.
