Tatum wins in battle of the two Roberts

Thursday, 19th July 2001.

ROBERT Tatum did just enough to hold off the challenge of Roberet Cramsie and clinch the Haverhill Golf Club Championship.

A second-round total of 72 was one better than his nearest rival after both men shot 71s in the opening round.

Tatum's bid for the F Johnson Cup was helped by the withdrawal of Kevin Robinson, whose foot injury meant he was unable to stake his claim for glory.

Steven Moye, meanwhile, was third to cap a great first year out of the junior section.

He was six shots adrift of the winning score, one stroke ahead of Robert Scott.

* Eric Kiddle enjoyed a hugely successful captain's day at which more than 100 people took part in the stableford competitions alone.

The top three in the low handicap section were G Price (42 points), S Nicholls (41) and G Scott (39).

In the higher handicap section, Pat McGarr (42) beat Graham Kennedy by two shots, with John Wilding a further stroke back.

Junior player Daniel Edwards (43) carded the highest score of the day, three ahead of David Spittle. Ben Boltwood was third on 34.

Other prizes went to Ryan Wingate (putting), Gerry Scottand Shirley Andrews (nearest the pin) and Andy Gelder, Mick Dalena and Dickie Woolmer (target golf).

* Junior organiser Gary Sargeant has announced an English Golf Union coaching scheme at which 10 club juniors will be invited to special training sessions with clun pro Nick Duc.

* The Haverhill club sides enjoyed a brace of victories.

Firstly at Coupals Road they beat Newton Green's mixed team and then at Cambridge Meridian, where the men where triumphant.

* Haverhill's club manager Doug Renyard has been re-elected to the committee of the Suffolk Golf Alliance (winter) for the third year.

He was voted in at last week's annual general meeting in Stowmarket.
