Tenants invited to increase employability with computer skills

Thursday, 19th May 2011.

Unemployed tenants of Haverhill's biggest housing provider, Havebury Housing Partnership, are being invited to take part in free IT taster sessions to improve their job prospects.

The four one-hour workshops at Havebury House in Western Way, Bury St Edmunds, are open to all tenants of the affordable homes provider, which manages 6,000 homes in Suffolk.

Director of operations, Philip Sullivan explained that the sessions on Friday, May 20, form part of Havebury’s five-year plan, Our Journey To Excellence.

He said: “The strategy includes our key objectives until 2013. Unemployment plays a central role in one of these aims, which is to ensure community inclusion for all our tenants.

“The Government has also indicated that housing associations will need to take a pro-active role in addressing the unemployment of their tenants. This is very important given the intended reduction of benefits and the possible subsequent rise in rent arrears.”

Among Havebury’s other methods of combating tenant unemployment are prospective workshops in CV writing and interview techniques.

The charity will also look to work with local training providers to offer literacy and numeracy training, as well as holding accredited courses in environmental awareness and sustainability.

Mr Sullivan said: “We also hope to work with other partners to engage our younger tenants and residents’ children who are not in employment or training. We will look to deliver activities on our estates with a view to encouraging these young people for the future.

“We are committed to extending our role within our communities in order to enhance the quality of life of those living within them.”

How To Use The Internet will take place at 10am and 1pm, with How To Create A Letter scheduled for 11.15am and 2.15pm.
