Terry picks up season's first big trophy

During the bank holiday weekend, Haverhill Golf Club hosted its first major tournament of the year – The Foundation Cup.

This was a 36-hole event played over two days, as medal format and open to men, ladies and juniors. Despite the typical Bank Holiday weather, there was a good turnout with a field of 68 competitors.

Terry Lyons managed to battle through to win overall with a very creditable two under par 73-65-138. In second place was Robbie Rudge with 73-68-141 on countback from third-placed Haverhill junior Liam Merritt, also with 72-69-141.

The juniors played in their first round draw for the Suffolk Junior Club Team Championship against Diss juniors on Saturday. It was a very closely fought match, with Haverhill just dipping out by four points, losing 98-102.

The results were as follows: (Haverhill team) Lewis Whiting 37pts, Liam Merritt 35pts, Michael Perrett 26pts, Charlie Sigler 26pts, (Diss) Chris Barnum 28pts, Adam Wright 27pts, James Biggs 31pts and George Osborne 43pts.

The April IFF Challenge was played on Wednesday, April 28. Trevor Broomfield just had the edge on countback with a great score of nett 65, and as a result had his handicap cut by a shot.

The full results were as follows: Division One, 1 Tom Marsh 77-8-69 (lowest gross); 2 Eric Armstrong 81-12-69; 3 Terry Lyons 82-11-71.

Division Two, 1 Trevor Broomfield 85-20-65; 2 Ted Fairhead 81-13-68; 3 Syd Gould 88-20-68.

Division Three, 1 Brian Harney 89-24-65; 2 Dave Seal 89-22-67; 3 Dick Sisman 91-21-70.

Haverhill Seniors had two matches last week, the first away at Waldringfield on Thursday, April 29, resulting in a 4½–3 ½ win for Haverhill, which was followed by a further successful match at home on Friday, April 30, against Newmarket, winning 5½-2½.
