The Dawn-ing of a new era

Thursday, 1st July 1999.

DAWN JASON smashed two championship records on her way to double gold at the Midlands District Age Group Championships.
The 12-year-old West Suffolk swimmer, from Haverhill, also won a silver as the club returned from Coventry on the first of successive weekends of the Midland District Age Group Championships with eight medals.
Daniel Pilbrow, who is really targeting the senior nationals at the end of next week, swam only one event - the 15-19 years 200m individual medley, and won it in 2 min 14.17 sec to give West Suffolk thier other gold.
But it was Jason who again stole the spot light with her performances in the 12-years age group.
The Parkway Middle School pupil won the 200m individual medley (2:34.38) and the 100m backstroke (1:09.93), both in championship best times, as well as taking silver in the 100m freestyle, in a national qualifying time of 1:03.69.
She currently leads the rankings for the 12-year-olds top girl award at the meeting with another four races to come this weekend.
Second in that is team-mate Carly Edwards, who clocked national qualifying times in her three races as she picked up silver, bronze and a fourth place.
Swimming in the same events as Jason, she was runner-up in the backstroke (1:13.49), third in the freestyle (1:05.40) and fourth in the medley (2:42.49).
Alan Bircher, another building for the senior nationals, was the club's other silver medallist, in the 15-19-years 400m freestyle (4:12.05). He was also third behind Pilbrow in the individual medley (2:18.54).
Samantha Neal picked up West Suffolk's other medal, a bronze in the 14-years 100m backstroke in national qualifying time of 1:10.28.
There were also national times for Kitty Craig for the 16-years 200m breaststroke (2:52.72) and Adam Young, in the 14-years 400m individual medley (5:13.57) as they were among six West Suffolk youngsters to reach finals without managing a rostrum finish.
