Thieves leave gas pipes hanging dangerously

Wednesday, 24th July 2013.

Police have issued a warning after a series of incidents where exterior gas pipes were cut by thieves attempting to steel piping.

Haverhill police are appealing for information after a gas pipe was cut and left hanging at the side of a home in Elmhurst Close, Haverhill between 10.30pm on Monday and 7.30am yesterday.

There appear to have been three similar incidents in the Haverhill area overnight on Monday to Tuesday with gas pipes cut or broken outside properties at Kirtling Place and Hamlet Road as well at the Elmhurst Close incident.

Police are warning of the dangers of tampering with gas pipes and the subsequent risk of leaks.

They are warning that if people are unaware that gas pipes have been tampered with, there is a risk of flames going near what could potentially be leaking gas pipes.

If you have seen anything suspicious in the area, or have any information relating to these crimes, please contact PC Sharon Coe at Bury St Edmunds on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
