Thieves targeting isolated buildings

Tuesday, 8th December 2009.

Owners of isolated properties and outbuildings in local villages are being warned to make sure they are secure in the wake of a series of burglaries.

The incidents, thought to be the work of one gang, have been reported in villages on both the Suffolk and Essex sides of the border, and particularly in villages around Clare.

Police are urging anyone who sees anything suspicious in their village to contact them.

Most of the burglaries have happened at night, but some have been during the day. The thieves take anything of value, but particularly target garden machinery.

Suffolk police are taking part in a joint inquiry with Essex and have increased patrols.

Clare-based PCSO Dave Matchett said people should be particularly careful at this time of year, if they were hiding Christmas presents away from children, in garages or sheds.

Anyone seeing anything suspicious should not approach a possible offender, but dial 999. If they see any vehicle which was out of the ordinary in a village, residents are urged to take the number and try to give a description of the occupants.
