Town centre pub plan

Thursday, 8th July 1999.

A new pub called the Drabbet Smock is planned for Haverhill town centre by JD Wetherspoon, which has won planning permission for premises at the back of the Market Square.
If the licencing application is successful, work will start on the former Murray's mobile phone and computer centre in September, before opening next march.
Eddie Gershon, a spokesman for Wetherspoons, said it planned to create around 20 full and part-time jobs.
The name was chosen as it was an agricultural workers smock made at the nearby Gurteens factory in the 1850s.
Mr Gershom said the pub would be created after a refurbishment likely to cost £800,000.
Chris Rand, planning officer for St Edmundsbury Borough Council, confirmed the change of use consent had been granted.
