Town centre traffic ban to be extended to Sundays

Thursday, 19th November 2009.

The latest proposals for pedestianising Haverhill town centre have come forward from Suffolk County Council, and they will clamp down on Sunday access.

In both Queen Street and High Street prohibition of driving will be extended from the current Monday to Saturday to become every day.

Another major change will be that when the High Street prohibition is in operation the south-eatern section from Quakers Lane upwards will be pedestrians only.

Drivers needing access to businesses in the other part of the street will be directed out via Quakers Lane and car park at the top onto the service road to exit at Helions Walk.

Times will also be changed for Queen Street and Camps Road on Saturdays to 6am-6pm to bring them in line with High Street.

The new prohibitions times will be Sunday-Friday 10am-4pm, Saturday 6am-6pm, for all areas.

The proposals have been sent to Haverhill Town Council for members to give a formal view at their meeting on Tuesday evening.

Original proposals dating back to 2007 have been the subject of consultations by the county council and the comments received have been taken on board in forming the new proposals.

Sunday access, particularly to High Street, has become much more prevalent since the opening of Iceland's store in September.

In whose interest is this supposed to serve? Apparently,Suffolk County Council have noted the increase in Sunday High Street traffic since the opening of Iceland.
Now, I would say that was a good thing- keeping the town centre vibrant in these tough economic times.Iceland has already had to cut the hours of their staff, following the opening of Tesco's.The County Council were quite prepared to permit the road layout to be altered for them,so lets see a fair deal for the opposition.

Some towns have not been able to fill the street gap left by Woolworth's yet, so nothing should be done to jeopardize the new incumbents. The Town Council would do well to take these points on board when the matter comes up before them on Tuesday.
