Town escapes the worst of the storm

Monday, 28th October 2013.

Haverhill largely escaped the ravages of the heavily-trailed St Jude storm overnight and this morning.

Some trees were reported as being brought down, with roads being impeded at the junction of Hamlet Road and Ehringshausen Way and in Chalkstone Way.

Nearby villages Kedington and Sturmer suffered power cuts, and many minor roads in the rural area were affected by fallen trees, but police say no one was hurt and there were no reports of serious damage.

Across Suffolk and Cambridgeshire police and emergency services were kept busy answering calls, particularly early this morning and during the rush hour, and East Suffolk was amoing the worse affected areas in the country.
