Town police are now tweeting news, events and arrests

Thursday, 4th July 2013.

Haverhill residents have a new way of hearing about work being done by their local police officers as two new Twitter accounts are launched in St Edmundsbury.

@StEdsPolice and @PoliceHaverhill have joined the social networking site and will be issuing regular updates about news, events, arrests and what's happening in their neighbourhoods.

The new accounts will be the fourth and fifth local areas to get their own accounts in Suffolk following the successful launch of @LowestoftPolice during the latter part of last year which now has over 600 followers. @ForestHthPolice (over 360 followers) and @MidSuffPolice (over 560 followers) launched earlier this year.

These are additional to the recently launched Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing Unit account (@NSRoadsPolicing) which already has 550 followers and the Constabulary's main Twitter account @SuffolkPolice which currently has over 8,500 followers.

The @PoliceHaverhill account will cover the Haverhill and St Edmundsbury Rural South Safer Neighbourhood Team areas.

You can find out who your local SNT is by entering your postcode in the ‘My Neighbourhood’ section on the Suffolk Constabulary homepage www.suffolk.police.uk.

Local policing commander for Haverhill and St Edmundsbury Rural South, Insp Peter Ferrie, said: “The Safer Neighbourhood Teams based at Haverhill and Clare are really looking forward to using Twitter to communicate with residents in their area.

“It will provide us with another means of engaging with our communities and will enable us to keep people far better informed about how their local police are helping them and spending time concentrating on issues that are important to them.

“I also hope it will encourage more young people to communicate with us, as they are a group that perhaps do not engage with officers as much as we would like them to.

"We look forward to receiving lots of tweets and information from the people of Haverhill and St Eds Rural South."

Police will continue to use traditional methods of engagement such as community surgeries, the media and the existing Police Direct service to keep members of the public informed on policing matters.

Bury St Edmunds policing commander Insp Jane Hertzog said: “It is important to remember that Twitter is not the place to report a crime or raise issues you want to discuss in confidence.

"For non-emergency matters or to speak with an officer from your local Safer Neighbourhood Team please use the 101 number. In emergencies always dial 999.”

The two accounts will be up and running from today with tweets and updates from the local policing teams throughout the day.
