Town police chief prepares to move on

Wednesday, 24th March 2010.

Haverhill's top policeman is to leave the town next month, and Haverhill councillors paid tribute to him at their meeting last night.

Insp Andrew Mason leaves on April 19 and will be replaced by Insp Chris Galley.

He told council members it was part of a large constabulary re-organisation which went right up to chief superintendents.

"I hope I've done some good in Haverhill," he said. "I think we have made good progress."

Cllr Margaret Marks said: "You will be greatly missed." Cllr Maureen Byrne praised Insp Mason's work and referred particularly to last week's Ring Of Steel operation, a clampdown on local motorists.

She said it was much needed and asked if would become a regular thing.

Insp Mason explained something similar was planned for about once a month, although not on such a large scale.

"This time we worked with Cambridgeshire and Essex and made some good connections with their officers," he said.

"All my officers are now trained in ANPR, the number plate recognition technology, and all are trained to take cars away from people if necessary."
