Town's first Sport Relief Mile a great success

Monday, 26th March 2012.

Over 200 people turned out yesterday for Haverhill's first Sport Relief Mile and were greeted with ideal spring weather for a jog or a stroll.

The Sport Relief Mile is held every other year at locations across the UK and anyone of any age of ability can take part by walking, running or jogging, including those with physical and learning disabilities.

This was the first time a community one had been held in Haverhill.

The charity event was organised by Haverhill Running Club in partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure and set off from Haverhill Leisure Centre, past the cinema complex and cricket club before the return journey along the pretty railway walk.

Entrants could choose to be sponsored to run, jog or walk one, three or six miles in aid of Sport Relief. The money raised will be used by the charity Comic Relief to help transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people, both at home and across the world’s poorest countries.

Trevor Bunch, the organiser from Haverhill Running Club, said they were delighted with the turnout as 200 places had been allocated and all were booked up, and then there were additional enrants on nthe day. He estimated 240 took part.

He said there had been locasl Sport Relief Miles held in the past by schools in the town, but this was the first one involving the whole community, with many families taking part.

How much has been raised will not be known for a week or so, when individual sponsorship is collected in.

There was a host of children’s activities organised by Haverhill Leisure Centre to mark the Mile providing a taster of the centre’s holiday camps which are run during the school holidays.

Activities including racket sports, basketball, football, laser blast were available in the main sports hall.
