Town's population about to hit 25,000

Monday, 16th July 2012.

Haverhill's population has nearly reached the critical 25,000 mark, the 2011 census has revealed.

The total for Haverhill's four wards is 24,534 which, allowing for some increase since then, means it must be very close now to the figure which, rumour has it, increases its interest for some major retailers.

The census also reveals the economic levels of the town's residents, and how they are spread across the wards.

In Haverhill West, for instance, over 40 per cent are in the top category, described as 'wealthy'. In Haverhill South only six per cent are.

In Haverhill North and Haverhill South the bottom category, 'hard-pressed' forms nearly a third of all residents.

Those of 'moderate means' - the next category up - form 37 per cent of Haverhill South and 48 per cent of Haverhill East, whereas in the other two wards the figures are around 15 per cent.

The middle category - 'comfortably off' - forms around a third of Haverhill North and West, and a quarter of Haverhill South, but only 13 per cent bof Haverhill East, although there 22 p[er cent are 'wealthy'.

The second category down - 'urban prosperous' - forms only a tiny percentage of all four wards.

Suffolk'spopulation as a whole has increased by nine per cent to 728,200 since the last census in 2001.

Other key facts in the 2011 census results, unveiled today, include:
* A rise in the number of 20-50 year olds living in the county;
* A slight decrease to the average number of people per household;
* An increase to the number of households since 2001.

The 2011 Census invited 25 million households to take part by providing a compelling snapshot of the number of people who live in the UK, and how this compares with previous decades. The census is conducted every ten years.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) is releasing last year’s census information in stages, starting with the following:
* Total number of households;
* Total number of residents by gender and age;
* The number of short term migrants.

Over the coming months, further information will reveal trends and detailed local information to help government, businesses, councils and communities take important decisions based on population growth and other key factors.

Cllr Jane Storey, deputy leader of Suffolk County Council and cabinet member for finance, said: “The census information provides us with a unique insight into the way we live now, and how this compares with the past.

"As well as being interesting in itself, this information is crucial for the county council and other organisations when it comes to taking decisions about meeting the needs of Suffolk people.

"We need to know about changes to the population, and how this is likely to affect the way we provide services now and in future.

"I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who took part. Your contribution really counts, and will help us for years to come.”
