Town set to expand - literally

Friday, 13th August 2010.

Haverhill's boundaries could be re-drawn under a review being carried out by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

Haverhill Town Council has been asking for boundary changes for some time, so that parts of Withersfield, Little Wratting and Kedington which are already considered to be a part of Haverhill, could be included.

These would include such places as the Spirit of Enterprise gateway roundabout, Barsey Close and parts of north-west and north-east Haverhill where development is proposed.

Informal agreement with Withersfield and Kedington has already been reached, but not with Little Wratting.

The town council's suggestion is that the new boundary would run beyond the proposed north-west relief road roundabout, thus bringing properties on the A143 up to and including the former Rising Sun pub (now The Fox) into Haverhill.

No increase in the number of councillors in Haverhill to take account of the larger population is being requested, although it might be when all the proposed development in the north-east and north-west areas is built.

The town council has also asked if boundaries with Essex villages and Braintree District Council could also be re-drawn at the same time.
