Town shoplifter jailed for seven months

Monday, 7th July 2014.

A Haverhill man has been jailed for seven months after pleading guilty to a number of shoplifting offences in the town.

David Kemp, aged 34 and of Fritton Court, was sentenced by Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Kemp had pleaded guilty to six charges of theft from a shop at a prior hearing on June 27, with five offences taking place at shops in Haverhill between May 7 and June 26, and one offence taking place in Ipswich on April 7.

He also gave an indicated plea of guilty to a charge of theft, relating to an incident in Haverhill on June 14 when an X-Box was stolen.

Kemp was granted bail at the hearing on June 27 pending a pre-sentence report, but then re-arrested on July 2 and charged with a further count of theft from a shop relating to an incident in Haverhill on June 22 and also charged with theft in relation to a charity box which was stolen from a restaurant in Haverhill on June 28.

He was remanded in custody and then pleaded guilty to the two additional charges when he appeared before Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ court yesterday, where he was sentenced to a total of 33 weeks imprisonment in relation to all nine charges.

Insp Peter Ferrie, local policing commander for Haverhill, said: "I'm delighted that David Kemp has received a substantial term in prison for these offences.

"He was a menace to shopkeepers and businesses throughout Haverhill and was responsible for a long catalogue of crimes.

"We have a small ring of professional shoplifters in Haverhill and this sends out a strong message to them that if caught they will receive a lengthy custodial sentence.”
