Trading Standards warning to Town fans

By Martin Chapman on Tuesday, 18th September 2001.

Suffolk Trading Standards has issued a warning to all Ipswich Town fans travelling to the FC Torpedo game in Moscow next week.

They want travellers to ensure that the company they are travelling with is financially safe.

The warning comes after Trading Standards revealed that they are investigating a company call the Russia House Ltd which they say, may not have enough finance to safeguard it’s customers.

This company has already advertised flights and accommodation in the local
media and The Civil Aviation Authority is now investigating the company and
urges fans to be very careful.

Trading Standards said that “any company that provides flights without appropriate financial protection is breaking the law.”

They added that “consumers should remember they have no comeback if something goes wrong.”

Overseas matches are an ideal opportunity for travel companies such as these
to promote one-off cheap deals. While they may appear to be good value for money
at first glance they are highly risky and provide no safety net for
travelling fans.

It is vital that anyone looking to book a package or flight-only to Russia
should ensure the company they are booking with has adequate financial
protection in place, which means making sure the company has an ATOL number.

If you are booking a package with alternative transport such as boat and
train or coach, again check the operator has financial protection. This
means making sure the company is ABTA bonded which ensures it has insurance
backing or a secure trust account.

Fans with any doubts are advised to call Suffolk Trading Standards on 01473 584358
