Tributes paid to council officer

Thursday, 30th August 2001.

TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular housing services officer, formerly based in Haverhill, who drowned in a holiday boating accident.

Andy Hilliard, 43, who lived at Watton, near Thetford, was a senior supervisor with St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Home Maintenance Service team in Haverhill. He was also involved with the Clements Estate refurbishment project.

Mr Hilliard died after jumping into the water to try and rescue his dog during a holiday on the Norfolk Broads.

Many tenants wrote to his widow, Julie, telling her of memories of him and how he had worked for them.

Steve Cook, director of housing for St Edmundsbury, described Mr Hilliard as "a super guy" who was a friend to colleagues and tenants alike.

"He was committed to making sure tenants got the best possible services. He was genuinely a very lovely man," Mr Cook said.

Carol Herries, St Edmundsbury housing services manager for Haverhill, said Mr Hilliard was a great asset to the council's team in the town and would be greatly missed by his colleagues.
