Two new 5k courses opened for runners

Friday, 29th June 2012.

Runners in Haverhill are now able to make use of the area’s first permanently marked 5K routes.

The routes have been set up by Haverhill Running Club working in partnership with St Edmundsbury Borough Council parks departmentt. Funding for the project came via a grant from the West Suffolk Local Strategic Partnership (WSLSP).

The new routes were officially launched yesterday evening at Haverhill Leisure Centre, where members of the public joined the running club for a 5K training run.

Pace groups catering for all abilities were led by the club's run leaders.

The routes are free for anyone to use at any time, and it is hoped that they might encourage more people to try recreational running as a way of getting fitter.

Each route has distance markers every kilometre, enabling new runners to pick their own distance if they can’t yet manage the full 5K.

Running club coach Trevor Bunch said: “Having distance markers is particularly useful to new runners who might not be able to run 5K in one go without stopping. A good way to start is to try running from one kilometre marker to the next, and then having a short breather before carrying on."

The two routes each have their own character. The one starting at the East Town Park visitor centre takes you along pretty green tracks and paths where you can see loads of wildlife. It is an undulating course but there is plenty of pleasant scenery to keep runners' minds occupied.

The other route starts at the Leisure Centre and runs out along the railway walk to Howe Road, and then back again. This one is flat and fast, and is a good course for those who want to test their fitness over a 5K run.

Details and maps of each route will be available at East Town Park visitor centre and also at Haverhill Leisure Centre.

Maps are also available to download from the club's website www.haverhillrunningclub.org.uk
