Two vandals arrested thanks to vigilant resident

Monday, 9th July 2012.

A call from the public resulted in a trail of criminal damage being brought to a quick end at the weekend and has led Haverhill's police chief to highlight how much they rely on the eyes and ears of residents.

Two teenagers have been charged with damaging vehicles in Crowland Road and Downs Crescent early on Sunday morning.

Police got a call from a member of the public that two men were seen damaging wing mirrors in Downs Crescent at around 2am.

Officers attended quickly and two men were arrested in the Castle Lane area. One was by a car and the othjer hiding on a garage roof.

The area was searched and further vehicles were found with damage, a total of 17 in all.

Stephen Chilvers, 19, and Elliott Clay, 18, both of Chivers Road in Haverhill, have been charged with damaging three cars and are due before Bury Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 24.

Insp Peter Ferrie said it was a good example of how many of their good results in the last six to nine months have been as a result of a call from a member of the public who has seen something.

"The message is getting out there," he said. "If people see something and call us straightaway we come and that is how we catch people."

He pointed out that if the person had not called them it would have just been another trail of damage next morning which would be difficult for them then to detect.
