Veterans battle through summer's evening

In the Norfolk and Suffolk Tennis League Division Three, Haverhill Tennis Club Men's B team visited Bury Victory C on a warm summer's evening.
Haverhill’s Geoff Plummer & Steve Withers lost to Ron Mather & Darren Hitchings 1-6, 0-6 but did much better against the other pair of Bob Huddlestone & Richard Cox, winning 6-4 and a tie break 7-6.
Haverhill’s second pair of David Payne & Peter Cundall, with a combined age of 132 years, overcame Huddlestone & Cox 6-3 and were 4-0 up in a tie break but lost it (4-6) 6-7.
Payne & Cundall then had two really hard-fought sets against the number one pair of Mather & Hitchings and, although again leading in both sets, finally lost 5-7, 3-6.
The match was played in a good spirit and was enjoyed by all, with overall result of Bury 5 Haverhill 3.
