Voluntary sector is “in need of resource centre”

Thursday, 25th April 2002.

The work of the voluntary sector in Haverhill is not fully recognised in a recent Social Impact Study on the town, a member of the Haverhill Partnership Group claims.

Former St Edmundsbury borough councillor Ron Hartley said only cursory reference was made to the voluntary sector in the report.

Yet volunteers saved the community hundreds of thousands of pounds each year by their work.

Mr Hartley said none of the main voluntary groups in the town worked in very amenf able conditions, yet around £390,000 had been spent on premises in Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmunds.

At the CAB one voluntary adviser has never been into the office because he is in a wheelchair. HAVO is also in an upstairs room.

the voluntary sector to have a resource centre which houses the main organisations.

“It is as if we are the poor relations.

“I think the voluntary sector in Haverhill requires much more consideration than this report gives it,” Mr Hartley said.

A suggestion by Partnership chairman Gerry Kieman was agreed that an audit should be made of the needs of local groups for premises.
