Vote of confidence in safety of town's car parks

Monday, 17th December 2012.

All the public car parks in Haverhill run by St Edmundsbury Borough Council have just received prestigious ParkMark awards.

The six sites to be accredited are Town Hall, Cleales, Lower Downs Slade, Ehringshausen Way, Leisure Centre car park and Meadows car park.

Cllr Terry Clements, St Edmundsbury Borough Council cabinet member for transport said: "I am very pleased to report that we have been awarded with ParkMark accreditation for all our Haverhill off-street car parks, giving our customers the assurance of safer parking status.

"Safety is built into the physical environment and into their management. It is part of our commitment to the highest standards of customer service, which we believe gives visitors confidence in coming to Haverhill and using its many facilities.”

ParkMark is part of the Safer Parking Scheme, an initiative of the Association of Chief Police Officers aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities.

The ParkMark is awarded to parking facilities that have met the requirements of a risk assessment conducted by the police.

These requirements mean the parking operator has put in place measures that help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour, thereby doing everything they can to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime in their parking facility.

For customers, using a Park Mark Safer Parking facility means that the area has been vetted by the police and has measures in place to create a safe environment, including appropriate lighting, effective surveillance, clean environment and quality management.

The scheme is managed by the British Parking Association (BPA) on behalf of Secured By Design and is supported by the Home Office.
