Warning after parked cars are damaged

Tuesday, 3rd August 2010.

Police are asking Haverhill people to keep a lookout for anyone damaging cars by slashing tyres or spray-painting, following a series of incidents recently.

In Layer Road, between 10pm Thursday, July 29, and and 8.30am the next day all four tyres on a silver Vauxhall Vectra were slashed in a parking area.

Then in Gloucester Road, between 3pm and 10pm on Friday both front tyres were cut on a black Nissan Pathfinder in a parking bay.

PC Mike Potter said they were appealing to residents to be watchful of people loitering around cars or squatting down beside a vehicle.

"We would ask anyone who sees this to contact us straightaway and not to approach the individual because, obviously, if they are cutting a tyre they will have a sharp instrument.

"These incidents are serious because they can be very dangerous. If a tyre is damaged but not completely deflated, a driver may be unaware of the damage until they try to brake at a roundabout."

A vehicle parked in Belmont Court had its side panels sprayed with grey paint overnight on Sunday to Monday, so police are also asking anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously and carrying paint, to inform them.

They also ask residents to make sure they do not leave pots of paint in insecure sheds or garages.

Calls in relation to these incidents should be made to Sgt Sarah Bartley at the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
