We care say Anglian Water

By Martin Chapman on Thursday, 5th October 2000.

THE Town Council have setup a public monitoring service after a public meeting last week which saw an Anglian Water official having to defend staff against incompetence in the on going saga of the Haverhill smell.
According to reports in the Weekly News, Haverhill residents are threatening to refuse to pay water rates claiming that Anglian Water doesn't care about the problem.
The allegation was refuted buy Dennis Doman the Service Delivery Manager for Anglian Water. He said: "If we didn't care we wouldn't be here."
He reaffirmed that Anglian Water was not considering relocating the plant out of the town after spending £100,000 in improving facilities at the site. He said they were sure the plant could cope with the town's expected growth and government targets.
Mr Doman was also challenged at the meeting by Graham Basham of M&M Leisure to see the effect of the bad smell coming from the Haverhill Treatment works was having on his business.
Mr Bashford said: "I bring a lot of people into the town from outside through my business. Many of them say the smell is bad and a lot of people say they won't come back again."
Mr Doman confirmed that he would take up the opportunity to see the effect on Mr Basham's business and hear the views of customers in the near future.
Concerns were also expressed by a local science teacher over the safety of the chemicals used at the site.
Town Mayor Gerry Kiernan thanked Mr Doman for attending the meeting saying, "when organisations come along and start listening to people it does make a change."
The town council are appealing for people to monitor and log complaints about the smell through their website or by phoning them on 01440 712585.
