Witnesses sought to attack which may be drugs-related

Monday, 23rd September 2013.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 19-year-old youth was beaten up by a group of men in the play area on the Recreation Ground laste on Saturday night.

The incident happened at around 11.45pm and the victim was beaten with a baseball bat, punched and kicked to the ground, suffering facial bruising a swollen left eye and a trooth knocked out.

Anyone who saw anything at around that time which might help police,is asked to call 101 and talk to PC Stuart Cirket.

Two men have been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident, but an unknown number took part.

It is thought the incident may be another in a series of violent attacks associated with drug-dealing in the town.

Haverhill's police chief, Insdp Peter Ferrie said police had been very proactive over the summer in the battle against the drug-dealers, with several raids and swoops on properties.

In July they raided an address in Trefoil Court and found six wraps of crack cocaine and ten wraps of cannabis. The occupant, Wayne Pearce, 33, was arrested and bailed.

He has now bee charged with possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, and a similar charge in relation to Class B drugs.

Police launched Operation Pilao earlier in thr summer, partly as a result of an incident where a man was stabbed several times.

Insp Ferrie said there had been incidents of violence, and some offencves were connected with drug-dealing. Also the burglary count had been high, thought to be a way of financing drug habits.

"Behind the scenes there is a significant drug culture in Haverhill," said Insp Ferrie, "not on the surface and not anything that members of the general public need to worry about at all.

"But I hope the work we have done over the last few months has at least knocked a big hole in things."

Haverhill has less of a drugs market than many other local towns, as is reflected in the number of drug-trafficking offences since April 1 - Babergh 18, Bury St Edmunds 35, Forest Heath 35, Mid Suffolk 8, Haverhill 10.

"It is not a serious problem," said Insp Ferrie, "but I connect a lot of these violent offences with the behind-the-scenes drugs world.

"When you have drugs and money together, you also get fallings-out."
