Woman's Shock as Car Smashes into Garden

Wednesday, 23rd April 2003.

A WOMAN has described the terrifying moment a car smashed through her garden wall as she lay on the sofa watching television.

Jean Edwards was watching EastEnders at her home in Haverhill, when the car careered through the concrete wall.

"I was watching television when I saw the reflection of the car in the television screen," said the 58-year-old. "It seemed like it was heading straight towards me."

Mrs Edwards said her concrete gatepost "exploded" and one piece of the wall hit her water pipes at the side of the house.

"I'm absolutely devastated," she said. "That's 40 years of gardening gone."

Fire crews were called to the house in Downs Crescent at 7.52pm last night, arriving to find the car in the front garden. An ambulance crew and police also attended the scene.

Both Mrs Edwards and the driver were attended to by emergency services.

The driver of the car is believed to have fallen ill at the wheel.
