Young traders to join in with Saturday market

Thursday, 1st May 2014.

Traders on Haverhill’s Saturday market will be joined by young entrepreneurs on May 17, who will be tempting people with their products and putting their sales skills to the test.

As part of the national promotion Love Your Local Market (16-24 May), Haverhill market is offering young people a free stall to try out their business ideas.

This is the first time Haverhill market, managed by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, has invited young traders aged 16-24 to take part, as a way of helping them launch their enterprise.

Sharon Fairweather, market development officer for West Suffolk, said: “It’s not too late to sign up for a free stall on the market. It’s an ideal opportunity for anyone with a business idea to test their venture, without expensive overheads.

“The stalls are free and people can sell anything – something they’ve made, a service they’re promoting or things they’ve bought to sell on.

"The stall judged the best will be offered a free pitch for three months to really see if their idea could be a success.”

One of the stalls hoping to catch shoppers’ eyes will be run by Charlie Cook who will be showcasing his range of colourful cushions.

Another stall will be selling recipe books and bags of herbs and spices for particular dishes. For catering teacher Carrie Spurling and her students Crystal Hudson, Jasmine Greenaway, Ellie Smith, Amey Hellen, Callum O’Sullivan and Nathan McNeil from Castle Manor Academy it will be their first taste of selling.

Ms Fairweather added: “There has been a market in Haverhill since before William the Conqueror and some of the biggest business names began as market stalls, including Marks and Spencer, Matalan and Tesco.

“Setting up your own business is very exciting and we hope this special promotion might be just the incentive local young entrepreneurs need to get them started.”
