Youngsters star in tennis club finals day

Tuesday, 14th September 2010.

Haverhill Tennis Club held it's annual finals day on Sunday, when club members and families and friends of finalists enjoyed a day of competitive men's and ladies singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches.

In the men's singles final 15-year-old Ross Tobin achieved his first senior finals victory against club coach Rob Jeffs winning 7-5 6-1 to take the title.

Tobin and Jeffs then teamed up in the doubles to take on defending champions and number one seeds Adam Fowle and Nigel Fitch who proved to be too strong, however, and came through as 6-2 6-3 winners.

Another teenager, last year's three times winner Abi Cartwright-Thomas, retained her singles title with a hard-fought three-set victory over Marcia Armstrong, winning 6-3 4-6 6-0.

Cartwright-Thomas was then joined by partner Lucy Hardwick to defend their title in the doubles, but they were beaten by the new teenage pair of Rachel Jeffs and Alex Jones 6-1 6-4.

The day ended with the mixed doubles event when youngsters and fourth seeds Tobin and Jones proved to be a formidable pair winning in straight sets 6-1 6-0 against father and daughter team Rob and Rachel Jeffs.

All in all the standard of tennis was very high, the weather was kind and in nearly all of the events it was the youngsters who came through as this year's stars.
